Tối 15/3/2021 (theo giờ Việt Nam), BTC lễ trao giải Oscar lần thứ 93 - 2021 chính thức công bố danh sách đề cử của 23 hạng mục quan trọng. Đáng chú ý, bên cạnh các tác phẩm điện ảnh đình đám Âu Mỹ, có đến 3 bộ phim châu Á lọt vào bảng đề cử năm nay gồm Minari, Mulan và Better Days.
Năm ngoái, bộ phim điện ảnh của Hàn Quốc Parasite là tác phẩm châu Á duy nhất lọt vào danh sách đề cử Oscar 2020. Đặc biệt hơn, "đứa con tinh thần" của đạo diễn Bong Joon Ho đã xuất sắc đem về 4 giải thưởng quan trọng gồm Phim hay nhất, Đạo diễn xuất sắc nhất, Kịch bản gốc xuất sắc nhất và Phim quốc tế hay nhất, trở thành niềm tự hào lớn cho nền điện ảnh khắp châu lục.
Năm nay, số lượng tác phẩm được tranh cử tại Oscar 2021 đã tăng lên. Trong đó, phim Minari (Hàn Quốc) được hẳn 6 đề cử ở hạng mục Phim hay nhất (Best Picture), Đạo diễn xuất sắc nhất (Best Director), Nam diễn viên chính xuất sắc nhất (Best Actor in a Leading Role), Nữ diễn viên phụ xuất sắc nhất (Best Actress in a Supporting Role), Kịch bản gốc hay nhất (Best Original Screenplay) và Nhạc phim hay nhất (Best Original Score).
Hai phim còn lại đều đến từ nền điện ảnh Trung Quốc gồm Mulan được đề cử Thiết kế trang phục đẹp nhất (Best Costume Design), Kỹ xảo hình ảnh xuất sắc nhất (Best Visual Effects) và Better Days được đề cử Best International Feature Film (Phim truyện quốc tế hay nhất). Mặc dù chưa biết kết quả ra sao nhưng đây rõ ràng là một tín hiệu đáng mừng, chứng minh nền điện ảnh châu Á đang trên đà đi lên và được công chúng thế giới yêu mến.
Minari là một bộ phim truyền hình Mỹ năm 2020, do Lee Isaac Chung viết kịch bản và đạo diễn. Phim có sự tham gia của Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri, Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho, Youn Yuh-jung và Will Patton. Phim dựa trên cuốn truyện bán tự truyện của ông, với nội dung kể về một gia đình gồm những người nhập cư Hàn Quốc cố gắng sống ở vùng nông thôn nước Mỹ trong những năm 1980. Trước khi thẳng tiến tới Oscar, Minari từng được khán giả yêu thích, giới chuyên môn đánh giá cao và giành nhiều giải thưởng danh giá trên đất Mỹ.
Trong khi đó, Mulan là bộ phim điện ảnh cổ trang do hãng Walt Disney thực hiện. Tác phẩm dựa trên huyền sử về nữ anh hùng Hoa Mộc Lan của Trung Quốc và là phiên bản chuyển thể từ bộ phim hoạt hình cùng tên năm 1998 của Disney. Phim có sự tham gia diễn xuất của Lưu Diệc Phi trong vai nữ chính, bên cạnh Chân Tử Đan, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Củng Lợi và Lý Liên Kiệt.
Cuối cùng, Better Days hay còn được biết đến qua cái tên là Em của thời niên thiếu, do đạo diễn Tăng Quốc Tường thực hiện, với sự góp mặt của hai diễn viên chính Châu Đông Vũ - Dịch Dương Thiên Tỉ. Chuyển thể từ tiểu thuyết nổi tiếng Thời niên thiếu của anh và em của tác giả Cửu Nguyệt Hi, phim kể về câu chuyện của một cô học sinh bị bắt nạt và một cậu thiếu niên giang hồ đường phố. Sau khi vô tình gặp nhau, sự tồn tại của mỗi người đã thay đổi cuộc đời của đối phương, giúp họ hướng đến những ước mơ trong tương lai và bảo vệ người kia bằng cách của riêng mình.
Cả ba bộ phim kể trên đều là những tác phẩm đặc sắc tiêu biểu của nền điện ảnh châu Á trong năm 2020. Với lượng đề cử nhiều hơn năm ngoái, hi vọng năm nay, những bộ phim này sẽ tiếp tục gặt hái được thành công tại lễ trao giải Oscar 2021.
